Write what you know?
By J. Patrick Lemarr on Jan 15, 2009 in Rant, The Journey
That’s the usual advice, right? Write what you know. So, what do you know? Seems like a valid question, I’m just not sure I know the answer – at least, not in a way that I can easily apply to my writing.
I know my own life story and the elements it involves. I know love and respect, pain and desperation. I know fear and falsity, lust and faith, sorrow and passion, even guilt and regret. These are all things I know. These are all things I put to work in my stories, but I’m not sure I am fully able to translate what I know into what I write.
As writers striving to find our way in the mad literary world, we all face such difficulties. How we handle them (or don’t) is what, ultimately, marks us as professionals or wannabes. Where do YOU stand?
